Who is it for: Those wanting to engage with the practical context of CER by watching videos instead of reading articles.
Why we love it: This video privileges residents’ voices in describing imbalanced power relations and harmful research practices in the Downtown Eastside. Interviewees clearly explain the need for ethical community-based research and the risks inherent to the pursuit of an “objective reality” by researchers who lack a connection to the community. The interviewees further elaborate on the positive impact of community-centered ethics in mitigating these risks and share instances of success in transforming research practices. It is rare to find a resource created by community members that so lucidly demonstrates the issues at stake with CER.
