Description: This talk will introduce audience members to the “the biggest lie on the internet” (known as “I agree to the terms and conditions”). Online consent is fundamental to privacy law in Canada, yet companies struggle to ensure associated protections. Dr. Obar will present study results addressing how the deceptive design of user-interfaces, the length/complexity of privacy policies, and the ignoring behaviours of individuals all contribute to privacy concerns linked to “the biggest lie on the internet”.
Bio: Dr. Jonathan Obar is an Associate Professor at York University in the Department of Communication & Media Studies. He also is a Research Fellow at Michigan State University in the Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and Law.
