Spark Talks: “You’re Nothing” – Researching the Labour Market Experiences of Undocumented Caribbean Careworkers with Carieta Thomas (Sep 17, 2021)
Description: With anti-immigrant sentiment on the rise, surveillance of immigrants has become common including in labour markets. Such surveillance is so normalized that it is not recognized as such, especially when used by employers. Using intersectionality theory, Carieta explores how pre-employment screening impacts the lives and employment choices of undocumented/illegalized Caribbean women careworkers in Canada and the U.S. The presentation will also provide insights on the challenges and strategies for conducting research with a vulnerable immigrant population, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
